Had a problem in the restrooms with girls getting crazy. Sometimes is was loud but one time a fight broke out. This made me think about what I could do. I don't like these girls acting out of control, loud, running around, screaming, and now--hitting each other? So, I started a little after school club. When I called a group of students out of class to my office (just happened to be nine top loud leaders of this running, screaming crowd of girls) they wanted to know if they were in trouble. I said if you were in trouble you'd be in the dean's office. You might be in the principal's office to receive an award or something! They all calmed down and sat quietly around my conference table, swinging back and forth in the swivel stuffed chairs. We talked about the purpose for school (learning) and life goals, serving others, and selflessness. I asked them to join my afterschool club to meet every Wednesday after school.
Today was the first official meeting and they all came! They all wanted to tell me about themselves which worked out great. Everyone wanted to go first so we drew names. After each girl told about themselves the rule was established that everyone could ask questions. Each girl took turns and was respectful of the others. Several of them spoke very quietly (I could barely hear them!) I joked with them about the contrast.
One girl said she hated all her teachers, hated school, hated all the other (many) schools she had attended and didn't like to do anything but sleep. Then I went out on the limb and asked her who her favorite principal was. She said I was the only principal she ever knew so I was her favorite. I take that as progress! (positive remark, eh?) When everyone had spoken except me, I told them they could ask me any questions they wanted. They all asked questions and I told them anything they wanted to know about me, my family, my sign, and if I liked animals. Not too intimate in the questioning, but this is only the beginning. I was just excited when they all showed! Now, what will next week bring and how many will stay out of fights, screaming, and trouble? I'm keeping track!
